Vásárhelyi, Miklós (1917-2001)
Journalist and politician. He took part in the wartime resistance movement and then began working in 1945 as a journalist and editor. In May 1954, he became deputy president of the Information Office, but was dismissed in 1955. He belonged to the party opposition group surrounding Imre Nagy and became press chief to his government on November 1, 1956. He was exiled to Romania and then sentenced to five years' imprisonment in the 1958 Imre Nagy trial. Thereafter, his job opportunities were curtailed. In 1972-90, he did research into press history. In 1973, he became a story editor for the film factory. In 1984, he was appointed George Soros's personal representative on the board of the new Hungarian Academy of Sciences-Soros Foundation, in 1991-3 its vice-president, and up to 2001 its president. He was a member of the pre-1989 democratic opposition and a founder member of the Historical Justice Committee, of which he became chairman in 1992.
