Gömöri, György: News sent to Warsaw on October 23

"When I arrived home on October 23 it had begun to get dark. It would have been half past five or six. Before I flopped down, I rang Warsaw, the paper Sztandar Mlodych. There was a friend of mine working there, Hanka Adamiecka, and I wanted to tell her what had happened, because I knew it would interest her, but she wasn't in the office, and I spoke to somebody else instead. The guy took notes. We left it that he would ring me back. I only crashed out on the bed after I'd filed my story, like a conscientious journalist, and then I slept for an hour or an hour and a half. When I woke up again, it was quite dark and I heard rifle fire. My mother was pacing up and down and wringing her hands, saying, 'What will come of this, Son?' Just then the Polish guy rang. I told him I could hear gunfire and this was a tragedy, because it looked as if it was turning into another Poznan. The guy was quiet for a minute, and then he said, 'I wish you all good luck.'"
