Orbán, György (1950)
Born in Nagykanizsa. His father, Nándor Orbán was an army officer, then a labourer after 1948. In the revolution he was commander of the Nagykanizsa National Guard. For this, he was sentenced to ten years imprisonment in 1958.
After completing Benedictine High School in Győr, as he considered he had no chance of getting into university as a class-alien, he began training as a typesetter in Budapest. In 1970 he was accepted for the law faculty of Pécs University, and he began his studies after regular military service in 1971. After obtaining a degree in law in 1976 he became a child welfare worker, he was secretary of the South Transdanubia body of the Hungarian Graphic and Industrial Artists' Association until 1984, after this he was managing director of Nyíregyháza Theatre until 1987, then top art executive of Pest County Council until 1988. He worked as economic director of the Theatrical Institute until 1991, then became commercial manager of Balassi Publishing House. In 2002 he launched an independent book-trading enterprise. From 1988-89 he was a member of MDF (Hungarian Democratic Forum). In 1998 he instigated and financially supported the erection of a commemorative plaque to Nagykanizsa National Guard.
