Born in Budapest, he received his secondary education at the Benedictine Secondary School in Győr, but was arrested at his hostel in 1962, along with several other minors, and sentenced to three years' imprisonment for conspiracy against the state and concealing weapons. On his release in 1963, he worked as a labourer and warehouseman. He completed a course at the National Theatre studio in 1968-9 and then joined the company of the Csokonai Theatre in Debrecen. He later acted in Veszprém and Győr, at the Bartók Children's Theatre in Budapest, and in Miskolc and Szolnok. In 1981, he joined the National Theatre company, moving in 1982 as a founder company member at the József Katona Theatre in Budapest. He received a Mari Jászai Prize in 1990 and has been awarded a Film Critics' Prize on three occasions. |
