Consequences of a birthday

Kálmán Tompa, physician to many writers and artists and an art collector, celebrated his 60th birthday three times at the beginning of January 1958. He received compliments from about a hundred visitors, most of them writers and artists. Among the well-wishers were a few moles. Analysts from the Ministry of Interior came to the conclusion on the basis of their reports that a subversive plot was in the making. This group of political detectives specialised in the affairs of intellectuals kept under strict surveillance the most suspected. Their phones were tapped, bugs were hidden in their flats and new informers were recruited. This study reconstructs the birthday celebrations and analyses its official consequences. It also touches upon the methods of the Ministry of Interior and shows the process of how the unity of the writers disintegrated.
