-1991 óta aktívan részt veszek a washingtoni Cold War International History Project, (CWIHP) (The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars) által koordinált nemzetközi kutatásokban, 1999-től mint a budapesti Hidegháború-történeti Kutatóközpont igazgatója.

-1991 óta szoros munkakapcsolatban állok a washingtoni National Security Archive-val (NSA) (együttműködés az Egyesült Államok Kelet-Európa-politikájával kapcsolatos dokumentumok összegyűjtésében, részvétel az általuk szervezett különböző nemzetközi projektekben.) 1996 szeptemberében magyar részről fő szervezője voltam a NSA és a CWIHP által szponzorált 1956: Hungary and the World. The New Archival Evidence c., 1997 októberében a Sztálin és Európa, 1945–1953 c., 1999 júniusában pedig a Rendszerváltozás Magyarországon 1989–1990 c. nemzetközi történész-konferenciának.

-1996 novemberétől tagja vagyok az NSA által alapított Project on Openness in Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union c. nemzetközi kutatási projekt öttagú igazgatóságának és egyben irányítom a projekt magyarországi kutatásait.

-1996 decemberétől tagja vagyok a Torontói Egyetem és a bécsi Kreisky Archiv által alapított East Central Europe and the Early Cold War, 1943–1962 c. nemzetközi projekt koordináló bizottságának és a projekt kiadványait szerkesztő bizottságnak.

-1999 decemberétől tagja vagyok a Londonban 2000-től a Frank Cass kiadásában megjelenő Cold War History történész-folyóirat nemzetközi szerkesztő bizottságának.

-2000 óta tagja vagyok a Harvard University-n megjelenő Journal of Cold War Studies folyóirat nemzetközi szerkesztő bizottságának

-2000 szeptemberétől tagja vagyok a Journal of Cold War Studies (Harvard University) történész-folyóirat nemzetközi szerkesztőbizottságának.

-2002–2005 között tagja voltam a Balassi Bálint Intézet Tudományos Tanácsának

-2004-től tagja vagyok a Cambridge University Press által kiadandó 3 kötetes nagyszabású tudományos vállalkozás, a The Cambridge History of the Cold War nemzetközi szerző-csapatának. (A szerkesztők a 71 fejezetből mindössze egynek, az általam készítendő „Kelet-Közép-Európa, 1953–1960” című fejezetnek a megírására kértek fel kelet-közép-európai tudóst, a többi szerző mind amerikai vagy nyugat-európai, illetve még egy oroszországi szakember szerepel a listán.)

-2005-től tagja vagyok a London School of Economics keretében működő Cold War Studies Center nemzetközi kuratóriumának.
